Total Ankle joint replacement is an alternative treatment for those patient suffering from severe pain of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Until recently, the only treatment available was that of ankle arthrodesis or fusion. Many of these patients have such severe pain that they would rather have their legs amputated. The gold standard for severe ankle pain due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis was that of arthrodesis. This resulted in relieving the patient of all the ankle pain but they began to limp and have pain at the knee and distal foot. By replacing the ankle joint with a prosthesis, the ankle joint is salvaged and there is motion.
Currently, there are only 4 FDA approved total ankle joint implants. I have been certified and trained on all implants. Inorder to give the patient the best device, I feel that one should be versatile in the choices of implants. These imiplants are that of Agility, STAR, Inbone and Salto Tolaris.
Note that ankle implants are indicated for patients with ankle joints damaged by severe rheumatoid, post-traumatic, or degerative arthritis. Total ankle arthroplasty is intended to give a patient limited mobility by reducing pain, restoring alignment, and replacing the flexion and extension movement in the ankle joint.
